When it comes to Melee it’s really a story of the four gods: Mango, Hungrybox, Armada and Mew2King. While other players, most notably Leffen, have been known to challenge and actually defeat the gods, it’s usually a safe bet to pick whichever god has been in form recently.
- Joseph “Mango” Marquez
Main Characters: Fox, Falco
Mango is probably the most volatile player in the Melee scene. He always has the ability to be either the best or the worst on any given day, depending on which Mango shows up. While he’s only won a single tournament this year (Royal Flush) and his inconsistency makes it hard to pick him as a winner, you can never really count out this 2 time EVO champion.
- Adam “Armada” Lindgren
Main Characters: Peach, Fox
I think that Armada is the best Melee player right now and a clear favourite to win the tournament. His consistency is just amazing. He’s won 5/7 of the tournaments that he’s entered this year (getting 2nd and 3rd in the others) and won 10 tournaments in 2016. In my mind there’s only one player that stands in his way of claiming his second EVO.
- Juan “Hungrybox” Debiedma
Main Character: Jigglypuff
Last year’s EVO champion is the only player that I think can challenge Armada this year. Hungrybox has had a good showing so far in 2017 but has come up second best in a few finals against the other gods. I’m really expecting to see the Hungrybox vs Armada grand final for the 3rd EVO in a row and, if last year’s incredible match is anything to go by, I can’t wait.
- Jason “Mew2King” Zimmerman
Main Characters: Sheik, Marth, Fox
The final god of Melee is the only one of the four who hasn’t yet won EVO in its modern era. Known for his technical understanding of the game and large character pool, Mew2King is one of the smartest players out there. He’s had some struggles against certain players this year, like ChuDat’s Ice Climbers, but I’m expecting a top 4 finish from Mew2King.
- Jeffrey “Axe” Williamson
Main Character: Pikachu
The final player to round out the list is Axe. He’s more of an honourable mention and a personal pick since I don’t really think he has a chance of winning but he’s one of my favourite players to watch. I just love watching and playing Pikachu so I have to give props to Axe. He should be able to make top 8 with a decent chance of upsetting a top player or two.
