In its final year at EVO, it seemed like the story of Marvel 3 would be about who could become the only repeat champion. ChrisG, Filipino Champ and Justin Wong, the 3 gods of Marvel 3, all only have 1 EVO victory, despite their dominance. Of these players, ChrisG is the only one that has a real chance at beating the top players who never left Marvel 3.
- Christopher “NYChrisG” Gonzalez
Main Characters: Morrigan/Vergil/Doom
Proving that he is still worthy of the title of god, ChrisG has been on a tear this year. After winning 3 tournaments and placing 2nd at a fourth, I can safely say that ChrisG is my favourite to win Marvel 3. One of the key strengths of Chris is that he’s proven himself to be one of the very few players that can beat RyanLV, the most dominant player of 2017. ChrisG’s weakness lies in his mental strength as he is known to get tilted easily when things don’t go his way.
- Rene “RyanLV” Romero
Main Characters: Chun Li/Morrigan/Phoenix
RyanLV is definitely the favourite for EVO 2017. He’s had as strong a start as anyone could hope for this year with 5 tournament victories and a 3rd place finish. Very few players know how to deal with his unorthodox team which utilises the mobility of Chun Li, who typically isn’t considered a very strong character in Marvel 3, to set himself up for Dark Phoenix.
- Vineeth “ApologyMan” Meka
Main Characters: Super Skrull/Doctor Doom/Firebrand
ApologyMan is one of the players that just never left Marvel 3. He may not win too many tournaments but he consistently places high in all of them. While I doubt he’ll win the whole thing, I can almost guarantee that he’ll make top 8 and he has shown that he’s good enough to beat RyanLV.
- Justin Wong
Main Characters: Wolverine/Storm/Akuma
While he may not have the recent tournament results to prove it, Justin Wong is the greatest Marvel vs Capcom player of all time. It’s been a few months since he’s entered a tournament so it’s hard to gauge how well he’s playing but Justin is someone you can never count out. He made top 8 of EVO last year while barely playing the game and I’m sure that he’s practicing much more for this final year, even though his main focus is on Street Fighter V.
